Appearance and GrowthGrowth problems are common in children and adolescents with gastrointestinal disorders, including Crohn’s disease. Weight can be generally less than expected, and height may be abnormal as well. Crohn’s can lead to malnutrition and inhibit the absorption of nutrients in children just when diet and nutrition are most important for growth — particularly, height and bone length — and development, including sexual development. Such lack of nutrients can cause the growth process to slow down. In children with severe growth problems, enteral nutrition may be required. Enteral nutrition is a type of feeding that delivers a nutrient-rich liquid formula directly to your child’s stomach or small bowel. This type of nutritional support ensures that pediatric Crohn’s patients get all the nutrition they need to help promote growth. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is another form of nutritional support but is given intravenously. While TPN delivers nutrients right into the veins, therefore bypassing the intestine and letting the bowel rest, it may cause more complications than enteral nutrition. Hormone disturbances are thought to play a part in growth problems among children. However, it is important to remember that most growth problems that occur in children with gastrointestinal diseases are not caused by hormonal disturbances. Your child’s doctor will determine the cause of any growth abnormalities once an accurate diagnosis of Crohn’s is made. In addition to appropriate treatment to keep Crohn’s symptoms under control, nutritional therapy can be of utmost importance to pediatric Crohn’s patients who experience growth failure. Children with Crohn’s are encouraged to eat a nutrient-rich diet that is high in calories to promote growth. Together with your child’s doctor, you and your child can formulate an effective eating plan that will provide the essential nutrients to maintain good health and keep Crohn’s symptoms under control.
