The complications that ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients experience depend on the location and severity of their disease. Some complications can be serious and chronic, while others may be more manageable with the help of treatment plans prescribed by a doctor.

  • Fatigue is a common symptom of AS.
  • 60% of AS patients have tissue damage on the lining of the colon that can cause painful cramps, anorexia, and weight loss.
  • Psoriasis — itchy patches on the skin — is a common complication of AS, affecting almost a third of AS patients.
  • Eye inflammation (iritis or uveitis) has been reported to affect 40% of patients with AS.
  • AS patients may experience inflammation where ligaments attach to bone. This can cause pain, tenderness, and breathing difficulties when it occurs between the ribs.
  • Heart problems can occur in AS patients.
  • AS patients may experience pain, tingling, and numbness in the buttocks and leg caused by an inflamed sciatic nerve.

The cause of AS has not yet been discovered. In the meantime, the goal of treating AS is usually to help patients maintain posture and range of motion.
